BAFTAs 2012: Nominations longlist announced

BAFTA recently announced the nominations longlist for its 2012 awards, with Tomas Alfredson's Cold War drama Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Simon Curtis' light-hearted romp My Week with Marilyn leading the way with 16 nominations each, including Best Film and Best Director for Alfredson and Curtis respectively. The recently released comes in third with 14 nominations, whilst Steven Spielberg's War Horse, Oscar-hopeful The Artist, Martin Scorsese's Hugo and Tate Taylor's The Help all feature highly.

There were, however, a number of surprise omissions. Andrew Haigh's superb modern British romance Weekend missed out completely to the bemusement of many, with Carol Morley's heartbreaking documentary Dreams of a Life also missing out in the Best Documentary category. Terence Davies' The Deep Blue Sea, Andrea Arnold's Wuthering Heights were also notable by their absence of the longlist.
