Preview: First trailer for 'White House Down'

Just when you thought that it was safe to go back into the Oval Office... It seems like an age since Jack Bauer and President Taylor were besieged in the White House all the way back in 24's seventh season. Luckily, lest the world think the building secure, Hollywood is this year serving up two bombastic raids on the American President's abode in quick succession. With Olympus Has Fallen having recently, well, fallen, the reins are now held by a man no stranger to destroying the famed building. Blockbusting director Roland Emmerich (best known for Independence Day and the American Godzilla reboot) is will be bringing the White House Down (2013) this summer, and the first trailer can be seen below.

Rather light on plot or dialogue, the trailer concerns itself primarily with showcasing the director's speciality; destruction. We see various famed landmarks exploding, helicopters swooping across Washington, and of course, the White House wreathed in flames. The West Wing, this is most certainly not. Despite the trailer not particularly setting the scene, the following synopsis was easily found on the film's website:

In Columbia Pictures' White House Down, Capitol Policeman John Cale (Channing Tatum) has just been denied his dream job with the Secret Service of protecting President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx). Not wanting to let down his little girl with the news, he takes her on a tour of the White House, when the complex is overtaken by a heavily armed paramilitary group. Now, with the nation's government falling into chaos and time running out, it's up to Cale to save the president, his daughter, and the country.

So, distancing itself completely from the year's earlier effort, Tatum's tough guy - disgraced and no longer a part of the Secret Service - ends up caught in the middle as terrorists came trampling across the Rose Garden. Can Cale save the President? You'll just have to wait and see; but Tatum will receive able on-support on screen in the forms of Maggie Gyllenhaal, Jason Clarke, Richard Jenkins and James Woods.

Roland Emmerich's White House Down is released in UK cinemas on 6 September, 2013.
